Raising A Reader is a national program designed to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of early literacy skills and how they can help build these skills in their young children to help them enter school ready to learn.

Parents attend eight weekly early literacy workshops with their children, ages 0-5 (older family members are welcome to attend, too). Families who participate in the program receive 12 high-quality children’s books to build their home libraries and are connected to local resources!

Southwest Human Development coordinates Raising A Reader through schools, community centers, libraries, apartment communities and other convenient locations. All interested parents and caregivers are encouraged to learn more and sign up today!

A Proven Solution

Independent evaluations conducted at the national level show that parents reported a 471% increase in time spent sharing stories with their children (five or more times a week) and Spanish-speaking families increased library visits with their children by 300%.
